Insadong Caricatures: A Smile Only You Recognize | Beautiful Caricature

Welcome to Beautiful Caricature.

Everyone has a different smile and a different way of expressing themselves. And, interestingly, our expressions seem to change a little depending on who we are with: the smile we share with a partner, the face we make while joking with friends, or the relaxed laughter we save for family.

Drawing caricatures at Ssamziegil in Insadong, we enjoy meeting all those different expressions and personalities. Today, we would like to share how those little details find their way into a portrait.

The special expressions couples share

When couples sit side by side for a caricature, each pair brings a different mood. Some laugh and tease each other, while others smile a little shyly. Even if you tend to make the same face for photographs, the expression that appears naturally beside your partner can be quite different.

Our artists bring out those individual features and charms in the drawing. Looking at the finished portrait and laughing, “That's the face you always make!” is part of the fun of having a couple caricature drawn.

The easy smiles that come with family

Families bring a different atmosphere again. Children watch the drawing with curiosity, while parents sometimes seem even more eager to see how their child will appear on paper. Perhaps because family members know each other's faces so well, they notice the smallest details right away.

“That looks just like Mum when she smiles!” Hearing comments like that makes us smile, too. A family may share certain features, but when each person's different expression and charm comes together on one page, the result captures a mood that belongs only to them.

A portrait that is special even when you come alone

More people come for a solo caricature than you might expect. Some discover the studio while exploring Insadong; others come because they want a drawing just for themselves. One person's bright grin may be their most charming expression, while another looks most themselves with a small, quiet smile.

A solo caricature has its own appeal: you are the focus of the entire drawing. It is also fun to discover a feature of your face that you had not really noticed before.

Even the same expression makes a different picture

The pleasure of caricature goes beyond simply reproducing a face. Smiling eyes, a slightly lifted corner of the mouth, a natural hairstyle: finding and drawing those personal details is part of what makes each portrait special. Couples, families and solo visitors all have their own atmosphere, even when they make a similar expression. No two finished pictures can be exactly the same.

If someone important to you cannot come along, we can also draw from a photograph on your phone. Bring a picture showing an expression you love.
